Green Golf Communities - Spring 2009

Environmentalism within golf, like the green movement overall, has been, and continues, to evolve rapidly. GreenGolfCommunities.net is designed to chart that evolution and to assist real estate buyers in determining the level of activism a community is following and as well as provide insights into its future arc of involvement

The four designations used by GreenGolfCommunities.net—Vanguard, Steward, Sustaining and Participant—represent current levels of involvement and commitment that characterize master-planned golf course communities.

PARTICIPANT
At the entry point of the spectrum, Participant represents communities that have taken basic strides and show the intention of doing more in the future. At a minimum, these communities have set aside relatively sizable acreage as green space.

SUSTAINING

Sustaining level communities demonstrate a deeper focus on the environment by taking additional initiatives. The direction of these initiatives, rather than being part of a master plan, are more ad hoc, but in the aggregate have a cumulative and more far-reaching effects.

STEWARD

Steward communities owe a significant debt to Audubon International in  that their participation in Audubon International environmental programs elevate them from the outset to Steward status. Other Stewards may achieve the level without certifying as Audubon Sanctuaries, but by presenting instead a solid list of achievements and green policies.

VANGUARD

Vanguard level properties on GreenGolfCommunities.net are driven to innovate and take the lead in environmental activism. These early adapters pioneer green efforts and aggressively seek out new ways to be environmentally progressive. Vanguard communities embark on virtually all of the basic and expected measures for a master-planned golf course community, then push further to help define new directions for their industry to follow.

You'll note below that community green programs are described as: Significant Green Space, Staff Naturalist, Nature Center, Education & Research, Audubon Sanctuary, Audubon Signature, Habitat Restoration, Green Construction (LEED, etc.), Conservation Foundation, Research Partnership, Volunteer Program, Common Gardens, Additional Awards, Pedestrian Commerce Center, New Urbanism, Innovation/Rails to Trails Paths and Archeological Preserve.
